How does he know they're "Italian"? 
I know some Albanians who run a knockout Italian restaurant, and they don't share that information with their general customer base.
Maybe this backup signals in plays? I don't know, but I don't see a Vandy point spread being worth a guaranteed $300K to a college kid. The offer could have been $40K and a college kid would think it's the offer of a lifetime.
