quote:Not that anyone cares, but the French treated WW2 like they did older European wars; they weren't concerned about Hitler and the Nazis. They went on the operating principle that "France would stay France", and not become a subordinate territory to Germany; and that politics would sort themselves out in about a decade at most. When the Germans got the jump and a clean shot at Paris, they didn't want their country ravaged like in WW1, with Paris possibly leveled. So to preserve their culture and historical sites, they tapped out.quote:
What made the French weak?
I don’t know. You tell me. I just know if it weren’t for England and the United States they would be speaking German right now.
Why have they become so prone to throwing down their weapons and surrendering? It is nature or nuture?
I'd say it wasn't so much 'cowardice', as it was short-sighted, and displayed a lack of understanding of how the 20th Century was going. They didn't grasp that it wasn't just a territorial dispute or a "Germans and French shooting at each other" event, Western Civ and democracy was at stake.
And many French absolutely hated that decision, fwiw.

So they were scared Germany would destroy their cities if they put up a fight. So, afraid of that, they just surrendered.
That sounds like the definition of cowardice.
I think World War One broke the French. So many of their men with a sense of honor and bravery were killed. All they were left with were the shirkers that hid in the ditch and lived. Those are the ones that rebuilt France after World War One. And we have been seeing the consequences of that for the last 100 years.

And I don’t disagree with you. I think we just have different ways of looking at it.

European heritage built civilization. All descendants of Europe deserve our respect

The French were lovers, not fighters obviously. They pretty much lost every war they’ve ever been in too.

The Norman’s and saxons absolutely. Beyond that is a decline of epic proportions

French culture doesn’t allow inbreeding! That’s a big problem for Bama fans

The French are very weak and lazy people. It’s well known.

For the past couple centuries, France had beaten Prussia, Prussia had beaten France, back and forth a few times. Nothing really happened to the losers, in terms of change of native culture. The loser would cede a political point, maybe control of a border area, maybe some colony far away from the homeland.
I think the French position with WW2 was in line with that- frick it, let the Germans have control over Central Europe, it's not worth fighting WITHIN France over.
They didn't conceive the scale of what was actually going to happen, because European wars had never played out that way before. They didn't want the repeated loss of population WW1 had brought, for what they expected would be a matter of foreign policy amongst the major powers.

Pretty rich, listening to a fan base knock bloodlines when their family tree doesn’t branch.

I was informed by a French Canadian friend that they mostly sat out WW2. That may be where some of this disdain comes from.

Holy crap this is the stupidest comment I have ever seen about the French in WWII. First off, France fell because of lack of imagination from the French military. Second, British soldiers in France also surrendered and/or escaped back to the UK along with 100.000 French soldiers. Third, French soldiers fought in every single theater throughout WWII. Fourth, the French Resistance was instrumental in the invasion of Europe and were beyond courageous.
Your comment is like saying that the US had no honor or bravery because the Phillipeans fell.
