Why does the SEC Tourney Champ in hoops mean more then the SEC regular season champ?

Is it just the finale of it and the end of season excitement?

Which one would you rather have on the resume?

Does the regular season champion get a trophy from the conference or is that just a bragging rights thing?

Regular season champion is always the better one to have in basketball or baseball.

It doesn't. At least not right now. The SEC is a strong league. The SEC regular season winner is guaranteed at least a 2 seed. Not the same can be said about the tournament winner although they get an auto bid

I wouldn't know. We aren't known for our basketball program.

Way back in the day the ACC declared that the winner of the conference tournament was officially the “ACC Champion”, and some fan bases in our conference still cling hard to that. I always thought that was stupid. The conference tournament is fun in its own way, but winning the regular season feels like the more impressive accomplishment.

Let's put it this way:

Does the best team always win the tournament? No not often at the conference level. And at the national level, it usually doesn't.

Does the best team always win the reg season? Almost always if not always by definition.

It doesn't. The regular season championship has always meant more.

It depends on your team and what your goal is IMO.

The only caveat with the tournament is that it gives you the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. If you're not the Regular Season Champ, then that makes winning the SEC Tournament highly valuable.

If you're Regular Season Champ, you should be in the tournament as an at-large.

Neutral court. SEC officials are traditionally very pro home court (it’s one of the things that continues to hurt us once we get to the NCAA tournament).

The conference tournament only matters to teams who still have work to do securing their seeding for the bigger tournament.

I hear you, but winning the conference over the course of an 18 game season is a alot more grueling/impressive than getting hot & going on a run over a few days. There's more equity in it.

The tournament is a fun experience & great for cinderella's trying to get an auto bid or improve seeding, but it's not as valuable as the conference championship.

I wouldn't waste energy on a conference championship tournament. It does little for seeding in the NCAA tourney unless it's a bubble team trying to make it in.

I prefer the conference tournament title because it’s an automatic March Madness berth. But as a power conference regular season champion, you’re guaranteed in the Dance.

Mid-majors and smaller conferences must win the conference tournament to get in. The regular season champion that doesn’t win the conference tournament is likely to be left out.

The ACC officially doesn’t have a regular season champion even though the schools claim them. This by-law goes back to the 1950s. It was deemed then that the ACC Tournament Champion is the conference champion because in those days, the tournament champion was the only bid for the conference. Officially the ACC regular season champion solidifies the #1 seed in the conference tournament.
