I think TV has killed those kind of guys because these guys today don't really nail down describing the whole setting and action because they know 90 percent of those listening to them are also watching it.

Eli Gold was taken off the BAMA basketball games 2 decades ago because he couldn't describe the action in real time and at breakneck speed. He's been the human delay button all his career in calling football games. Down and distance seems to have alluded him completely.

I like distinctive voices as much as the next guy, but that is pretty much what they can say about Eli's career. And he's a nice guy and loves BAMA. But that doesn't give you down and distance.
