Eh. I haven't lived there since mid 90's. Although in 2023 I spent probably a 1/3 or 1/2 of the year there after mom had a stroke. She passed away a few months ago. The last year has been hell. I was just there last week and have to go back again next week.

It's worse than I remember. Everybody's on the draw. No pride anymore.

Harlan was called Bloody Harlan before the Harlan Co. war. I don't think it's changed all that much but that's part of the problem. It's just you got far enough away to see how bad it was.

Harlan though is an extreme example of what's plaguing most rural counties in the US regardless of region. No opportunity. No hope for anything beyond joining the military to get the frick out.

I hate this. You can only draw because someone else is working and paying for it. I detest lazy, unmotivated people to simply pay their own way.
Blame all levels of govt for allowing it.
