Georgia has been selling beer at Jack Russell Stadium for some time now so I don't think it was about anything beyond logistics.
Athens has some top notch breweries so I'm more inclined to pay $6 for a pint of good beer as opposed to paying $8 for a can of Coors Light or $9 for a 16 ounce Budweiser.
Athens now has the "Athens Beer Trail" to enjoy:

I rarely buy stadium concessions. Besides, one beer will cost as much as a six pack at the store
