I've read that the people in Eastern Ky were pro-union while people in West Ky were pro-south. It was said to be similar in Tennessee where the East was loyal while the Middle and West were for the South.

The successionists were their own worst enemy because Lincoln probably would not have done anything to split the union like end slavery.

More like true isolationist. The mountains of EKY / ETN / Virginia (W) / WNC were all mountain people and the only place you fine Mulegoin (Indian / Europe / African) as they were the outlaws and the outcast so they bred with each other. As a kid I never went to their communities without an invite and an escort as they were skeptical and distrustful of all who were not them.
