There's just no way to know this. Nobody would've thought that Penix would throw for 9200 yards in two seasons after his first 3. Except DeBoer. Nobody wanted Penix. Indiana is NOT where 5* go to play. DeBoer took Michael Penix and a bunch of 3 and 4 stars to the last game of the season.
Saban didn't try to recruit Penix, but with Penix last year Saban probably retires with another ring.

Also what is getting lost in all of this is a HC's ability to do cost-based analysis. If Mack costs $300k, and Sayin costs $1m, both throw for 3500 yards, who's the better choice? A sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. DeBoer is playing moneyball.
