re: SECr straw poll: if DeBoer didn’t have 67 wins at NAIA, how bad would Bama be melting?

Brian Kelly spent his first thirteen years at Grand Valley State. LSU count those wins. He then spent three years at Central Michigan. Then a “major” school took a flyer on him. He then went 34-6 in three full seasons at Cincinnati, culminating his final season there with the only undefeated season of his career (he doesn’t get credit for their Sugar Bowl win though as he had already departed for Notre Dame).

Coaches have to work their way up the rungs of the ladder. Deboer is a solid hire.

There wouldn’t be so many threads about how horrible he is from rival fans if he actually was horrible. Instead Alabama fans would be the ones lamenting the decision and everyone else would be snickering and saying “Great Hire!”

But no, Deboer has rustled the jimmies around here.

I don’t count those wins. BK is doing extremely well so far fixing his frick ups from this season but I’m not going to sit here and say that I fully believe BK can win in the long term in the SEC because of what he did at Grand Valley State. It’s a non factor.

DeBoer is basically a 100% unknown IMO. He has a good record from 20 years ago at the NAIA level, he has a short tenure at Fresno, and a good tenure at Washington with a Heisman finalist QB. None of those things are indicative of how good he is or isn’t going to be, but y’all are choosing to ignore his poor recruiting track record, shaky wins against sub par competition, and the massive boost that coaches get from having a Heisman-ish QB in favor of his wins at a crap school that no one has ever heard of.
