Alabama hired “a coach” but not “the coach” as the situation requires…

From the Rant but originally from a wise and realistic fan:

Let me first say, this fan is one of the biggest Alabama fans I've ever met. She's about as die-hard a fan as you can get, which is why our conversation threw me for a loop.

As a good LSU fan, I immediately began ribbing her as soon as I saw her. I asked her how she felt and she stated she didn't know Saban personally, but it felt like someone close to her passed away. She said she's said Saban's name over the last 10 years more times in her house than her kids' names.

This is where our conversation took a turn I was not expecting. I asked her who she would like to take over and she said she didn't care. She said we just need "a coach," right now, not "the coach." I immediately asked her what she was talking about.

She said it didn't matter who they hired because Alabama fans are so unrealistic right now that it doesn't matter what the next coach accomplishes, it's never going to be enough. She added that even though the fans might not say it, the fans are still expecting Alabama to have the top recruiting class, win the West and the SEC Championship and compete for a NC every year.

She said Alabama just needed "a buffer" to come in and take some lumps for a few years and then you fire him and then you go after "the coach." She said losing a few games will make Alabama fans have more realistic expectations and then you go get "the coach" and then he has a chance to be successful.

Needless to say, I was shocked because she was the last person I was expecting to hear that from, but she's 100% right.

I know that most gump fans will not acknowledge this and i certainly will not be surprised to see them win 10 games next year but if they don’t win the Natty, Coach Buffer will start feeling the heat and it will be intense.

That said you may not have gotten the coach you want but you got the one you need.

Oh, and welcome back to the pack bitches! (Sorry too much Tiger in me)

I would bet $1 million that she did not attend the University of Alabama.

Sure, this (likely made up) person sounds wise and realistic. Lol

I know that historically this is how fans react, and I have no proof how we'll adapt to all of this.

We ALL know it won't be as good as we had it. I think that's a given. Time will tell that... but in the end, ALL of our expectations have been lowered like crazy. I think that will help him last to year 3 or 4 regardless. By then, we'll see if he can hack the recruiting needed to be highly competitive.

After year 3 or 4, it's reasonable to start putting fan pressure on. I don't think we will at all until then, to be honest.

What is DeBoer going to think after his first loss when Bama fans start shooting people like they normally do?

He is a good hire, and I bet a damn good coach and he will do a good job I have zero doubt. And you will run him off in 3-4 years no matter what he does I also have no doubt. Because no matter what he does it’s unlikely he will win 2 nattys in that time period and will never be able to live up the the expectations of your fanbase following Saban, because no one can. Then you will have a shot of getting the next coach

I don’t believe that is a requirement to be a fan. Otherwise every kid growing up cheering for their state or family’s team wouldn’t have the right, or maybe they can cheer for the team till they turn eighteen, but then if they choose to get a job or join the military, well then they can’t be a fan anymore.

Regardles of how fans feel about DeBoer, I'm really glad that they didn't bring in Drinkwitz who I personally believe has the potential to be a superior coach in the right program.

The only coach that is "the coach" since Saban retired is Kirby Smart, and he's found his home already.
I don't know how DeBoer turns out, but I'm happy with the hire based on what is available.
