Apparently, Mizzou was willing to at least compete with LSU on Baker's salary:

Well, that's what I'm trying to determine. Let's say I acquiesce on LSU being the better (short term?) opportunity. If Baker's really the guy why not go nuclear? Pay him $5 mil.

If Mizzou is destined to be a stepping stone, at some point you have to stop the bleeding. Seriously, what is a million or two when you have a current step up and want to continue to build?

A couple of million dollars is nothing if you are trying to make systemic changes.

Cue the Jimbo Fisher warnings.

Are you asking why Mizzou shouldn't offer an outrageous price to keep him?

Because Drinkwitz and your AD are good at their jobs, and presumably already have a shortlist of potential and realistic replacements.

There are zero schools in the SEC that aren’t stepping stones for coordinators.
