When? Auburn hasn’t had any football probation in 30 years

This is past 30 years, but did Pat Dye ( the guy AU's field is named after )have to step down as AD & coach amidst an NCAA investigation ?

No. Dye retired as AD.

I may be mis-remembering though.

It's a long story, but basically Dye got fricked over by a turncoat traitor player named Eric Ramsey. He called Dye and his assistants asking for money and then recorded the convos. Remember, this was the late 80's and recording a phone call took equipment, which makes one wonder who put him up to it. Why is a 19 year old college football player recording his coaches? Why did he have a lawyer before most of this went down? Why would you try and take down the HC who gave you a scholly and was agreeing to commit violations to help you financially (after you asked)? Why did he go to 60 Minutes and give them the tapes? Who was behind it, really?

People from outside Alabama don't realize how ruthless the bammers are. They will stop at nothing to try and take down AU, especially when AU is having success (as Dye was). And then they have the gall to say it is AU who is obsessed with Bama.

Remember, Dye dominated Bama on the field and had just won four straight. Bama was still reeling after Bear's retirement. While pretty good some years, they never could get back to Bear's dominance. They had a 10-0 season in 1989, but AU beat them and ruined their NC hopes. Also, remember Dye is the one who forced Bama to allow the IB to be played in JHS for the first time. Bama fought that tooth and nail and didn't want to give AU the privilege of playing the game at their home stadium. So the bammers really hated Dye with a passion. Not long after AU killed Bama's '89 season, the Ramsey stuff hits the press. Pretty convenient.

Interestingly, Bama also got in trouble around this time for the Gene Jelks stuff. What was funny is Jelks was a DB who covered Ramsey in the Iron Bowl. That is quite fitting.
