Sounds like my kid. Got into both, but felt more comfortable in College Station versus Austin. And tbh, as a parent, I feel more comfortable with College Station versus Austin. We currently live in a town that is still somewhat of a rural town (Lucas) that is 5 minutes from a northern Dallas suburb (Allen). So, kind of goes along with how you described your family.

To your point, I'm 24 miles from you and have never heard of Lucas. Google searched and that's a good spot, hopefully the yo yo's in life don't invade and ruin it anytime soon.

We personally know over a dozen sip parents that sent their kid to A&M over Texas due to how insanely liberal Austin and TU has become
