I can remember watching Mark Richt teams and how often we would commit very dumb - very atrocious - very disheartening penalties - Just non-sense penalties that would keep drives going or ruin our own drives. Personal Fouls that would just kill our momentum. This is not a knock on Richt but when you would play good teams you couldn't afford to have any player do something stupid and we would do it all the time.

Today, Brock Bowers was about to lose his mind over some unsavory play by a Tennessee player and the first thing that happened was one of our own lineman removing him from the situation like a leader. I feel like our boneheaded mistakes are so few and far between now and it is awesome to watch.

Go Dawgs

Well said. This program is amazing and it’s only the beginning.

It was Oscar Delp that dragged him out. Tight End.

It absolutely is, and it's 100% okay to point out that there were chinks in his white knight armor. Richt was a good coach, but he had flaws that people allowed to be masked by his penchant of coating himself in the armor of "god".

Some of us were all but crucified for trying to point them out, and became tired of the "good man" shite slung around by Richt apologists when arguing these very points.

Kirby has chinks in his white knight armor as well. However, I myself am currently blind to them, so forgive me if I ever fall back to the "well, he's a good man" arguments whilst defending him.

But, yes, discipline is definitely not a chink in the armor. Look at Bama last year to see just how important discipline is for a talented team. Oftentimes, the lack of discipline is the only thing that can ever beat them. Kirby should bottle whatever he does, in this regard, and sell it.

Kirby is a great coach no doubt in part due to his experience gained under Nick Saban.
Mark Richt made his philosophy regarding discipline well known. Richt rationalized excessive penalties as a trade-off in motivating his players to play aggressive/wide-open.
I disagreed with this philosophy during Richt's tenure and felt that it was his greatest weakness.
I equate it to parenting to some extent: lack of discipline is the easy way out because it means you don't have to engage in those tough confrontations that instill discipline.
Kirby is quick to engage in those confrontations as teaching opportunities and it shows in the high quality of our teams.

Back in the day we'd have more personal foul penalties by the middle of September than we do in an entire season now.

This shite still doesn't seem completely real sometimes.

It’s ok to point that out and interesting that you did so because FSU led the ACC in penalties during the time he was there with Bowden. Just an unfortunate thing that Richt brought here from FSU….being undisciplined….and indeed, Georgia also led the SEC in penalties several times during the CMR era.
