Look at Stetson Bennett for example.
A walk-on recruited by no one but he has that clutch factor in him that recruit ranking sites either can't or fails to measure.
Has the natural presence under center. Yeah some guys develop this later but with most young QB prospects you can see it almost immediately.
Some guys just play better when the lights are bright and the moment is big. Most people don't have it. The ability to become better in the biggest situations is rare.

Yeah, he's great at clutching a drink...
But on a serious note: really surprised how his NFL experience has gone. Hopefully he can turn it around and make a contribution.

Bennett is actually the perfect example to disprove your point. He was at UGA as a walk-on. Didn't play a snap as a freshman. Transferred to JUCO when Fields committed. He was headed to be a Ragin Cajun until Fields transferred. He was offered a scholarship and returned to UGA as a backup.
Had he had the "it" factor as a true freshman, he likely would have been offered a scholly to keep him from transferring. If he had the "it" factor in JUCO as a starter, he would have been offered better jobs than a directional school in LA. His familiarity with UGA system, potential for growth, and timing, luck and opportunity gave him a shot to return to UGA and wait for his shot. He was arguably much more developed by the time he took over at UGA. But it likely wasn't something that was evident when he first stepped on campus.
