Yes and while there were rumors he was getting out of control w/it the drinking ultimately wasn't why he was canned.

Two main things led to Sumlin being fired.

At the end of 2015 he lost two 5 star future NFL QBs within a week of each other in Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray (an Aggie legacy) mainly due to his refusal pick either one of them as the starter. According to former players he made zero effort to talk to either of them all during the season while yanking them in and out of the lineup w/almost no rhyme or reason. This debacle lost Sumlin quite a few boosters and many wanted him fired then and there.

Then to start 2017 he blew a 34 point second half lead w/just 19 minutes left in a game against UCLA where he literally could have just run down the clock and taken a knee the entire 4th quarter and won. Instead kept his foot on the gas running HUNH w/a true freshman Kellen Mond who was only in the game b/c starter Nick Starkel went down w/injury. The only coaching decision I've seen come close to challenging his final 19 minutes at UCLA for worst of the last 10 years was Mario Cristobal's inexplicable refusal to knee out the game that led to losing against Georgia Tech this season.

There is a good chance that if Sumlin doesn't blow the UCLA game he survives the 2017 season. But between losing the two QBs and then the UCLA game he lost all support from the boosters.
