Back in my day that was way better than social media clout.

Times have changed. Social media is everything because of the potential to get paid. Motherfrickers on TikTok are making millions broadcasting themselves playing video games. Was that happening back in your day?

From Tim Watts:

Chris Youngblood - USF Bulls - Small Forward (on3.com) arrived for his Alabama visit today (he leaves Sunday), and the early feedback is strong in Bama's favor. Couple of sources tell BOL that the visit is going well. And that isn't shocking, as most visits do. It is worth noting that Youngblood had over 40 schools reach out the minute he hit the portal, but the UA trip leapfrogged others after Youngblood spoke to Nate Oats and staff.

That happened Thursday around lunch. A couple of visits had already been scheduled elsewhere when Oats reached out and Youngblood quickly rearranged his schedule to be here this weekend. So, the interest from Youngblood's end is obvious.

Oats is making a big impression and sources near Youngblood’s recruitment see the system as the perfect fit. Also, there is a hometown feel here with the dad being from Tuscaloosa and his mom having attended UA, per Mr. Hastings.

Tomorrow will really tell the tale, and if things go as expected, we feel UA will be very tough to beat here.

Griffen is a very solid player, might be a late 1st rd NBA guy if he develops a better handle.

I don’t do social media especially as it relates to following players so if he’s smack talking Bama obviously I’m not a fan, but his perimeter defense in the tournament was a key factor in the team going from where they were during the regular season to ending in the F4.

I also just refuse to view any of these guys like I used to because they’re just minor league professionals at this point. So some guy transferring to catch a paycheck from Kansas is no different than a pitcher leaving the braves for a huge deal with some other team.

I don't disagree with any of this.
I don't follow any athlete on social media. I use it to get news mostly. But I know the potential of monetization. I also understand the urgency of collecting as much money as possible in college. Most of these dudes are going to grind out a living in the G League or overseas. I have zero understanding of why a guy that's making $500k+ wouldn't want to stay in college for 5 years. Every year a solid player could get a raise and parley a 5 year career into over $2m. I also think guys will realize this and start staying in college. The market will work it out.
The same for guys in football.

Idk why the NCAA won't lift the eligibility rules. Why not allow a guy play 8 years in college if he remains a student? Why limit the universities to only having a player to 4-5 years? It's dumb. Especially since universities are paying these players more than they can make in the G League or overseas??

I also am for universities having summer leagues for guys that don't get to play much. Kind of like JV for the underclassmen. Make them redshirt and only have redshirt players eligible and have summer league games. It could be mostly regional so that travel expenses are lower, then right before summer is over, have a tournament like the NIT. People would go see these games like people watch minor league baseball. It would also do a lot for player development and rehab for injured players. It could be like under 17 soccer matches.

A player can say two words on Instagram and everyone interprets it differently.

Yeah, I think the "no cap" is being a little overanalyzed. I took it as "I may be leaving but still want to compete". The comments about it not being about the money isn't surprising, as not many kids would openly admit that. I also have heard it has a lot to do with moving closer to home (which could definitely be proven false depending on where he goes).

I hate it and didn't expect it, but I won't get mad at a guy who played a huge part in us getting to our only Final Four

And it’s usually something stupid like lyrics from a rap song I’ve never heard of.

I'm just glad I can now say, "what up, Youngblood?" During games. I have a feeling I'll be yelling it when drunk.

From a usf fan about his defense...

quote:

He was excellent. Very aggressive on the ball and would occasionally get in foul trouble every once in a while but was our best defender on the perimeter.

And

quote:

Very solid perimeter defender.

Can also score at all three levels offensively.

Also

quote:

Was hoping he was headed home to Tuscaloosa when he announced his decision to portal. Gonna be rooting for him next year.

Good group of fans, apparently.

Team was recognized at A Day to big ovation. Most guys were there including Cosby. No Griffen, Stevenson, or Nelson, though.

Stevenson not being there is surprising. Don’t want to read into though.
