Question. Is it really a fair catch call with that one player that raises his arms up by his side?

It was an INVALID Signal.

From the rulebook:

Valid Signal

ARTICLE 2.

A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.

Invalid Signal

ARTICLE 3.

An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:

That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above); or

That is given after a scrimmage kick is caught beyond the neutral zone, strikes the ground or touches another player beyond the neutral zone (A.R. 6-5-3-III-V); or

That is given after a free kick is caught, strikes the ground or touches another player. [Exception: Rule 6-4-1-f]

------------------

An invalid fair catch is the same as with a valid one — the ball is placed at the spot of the catch.

I have never understood the reasoning with LSU and UT fans bitching about officiating along with the SEC offices being in B'ham. Hell the officials fly in from all over the country to officiate.

A couple years ago, on a different Bama site, someone did the previous 10 years worth of games under Saban. We averaged more penalties than our opponents during that span. Stats disproved their delusion of home cooking, but whatever. Can't be swayed by the facts.

Question. Can you use Google and look it up in the NCAA rulebook? Or do you want me to do that for you?

A valid catch is defined in the rulebook as the guy actually catching the ball extending his hand overhead and waving it from side to side. Anything else...by any return guy...is invalid and results in the ball being marked at that spot.

Edit...sorry, I didn't see that someone beat me to it.
