I turned 14 that year. It was nice, we had cell phones and the internet but they didn't control our life like they do now. And the world hadn't gone full retard yet.

I remember 1998 vividly, I was in college, and nobody I knew had cell phones. I knew one guy with a cell phone and it was his dad's company phone, his dad never used it so gave it to his son. It had the antenna that you have to pull out.

Where and how did you grow up that you had a cell phone at age 14 in 1998?

Cell phones were becoming a thing but they were still a major novelty item. My mom had a cell phone and so did my grandmother. I was more excited about cordless phones at that age because that meant I could take the phone into my room and talk to my friends or girls rather than be forced to talk to them in the kitchen or my parents' bedroom. You could do that with a cell phone obviously but back then the charges for calls that lasted more than a certain amount of time were absolutely through the roof.

We didn't really have a computer at that time so I spent the majority of my time outside playing with neighborhood kids when I wasn't doing homework or chores.

My first cell was when I started driving in 2001, so someone having one 3 years prior isn't too far fetched. I'm betting it was a clunky block looking Motorola brick

I didn't say I had a cell phone then.
