You can’t tackle guys this big and fast by going high. They’ll throw you off.

We watch thousands of tackles and it takes a very unique circumstance for something like this to happen. A low hit when you plant your foot. This was terrible but not dirty. These are big guys moving fast.

Chubb is one of my all time favorites and I hate it for the guy but like rig said, he needs to take his money to Chubbtown and do his thing.

I won’t go so far as to call Fitzpatrick a dirty player, but I will say that he knows better than to throw his body like recklessly at someone’s knees like that when someone else is engaged high.

What happened was essentially the defensive version of a chopblock. There’s a reason that play is illegal.

If Fitzpatrick wraps up like he’s supposed to, neither of them get hurt.

It wasn't a dirty hit. Just a really unfortunate thing.

People always consider such a hit dirty when its an OL doing it to a DL. There is even a penalty specifically against such hits on the line due to its dirtiness.

I wouldn't watch it (again?) if I were you, but it wasn't like a chop block.

What the frick? This is pro football dude - these guys get paid millions for this. They can choose not to ya know.

Yeah. And they can ride the concussions, and all that.

I knew, when I posted it, purists would complain. Same as those that probably thought the leather helmet was the height of gear back in the day.

If either league wants to eliminate injuries - and I'll argue they really don't, up to a point, but they want folks to believe they do - then they'd eliminate special teams plays just about entirely. Do a count in any game you watch, with number of plays and number of injuries. Kickoffs and punts are the worst.

Next to that ? The hits to knees and below. Just like you saw now. Maybe, instead of above the waist, the rule would be above the knee. But then you'd have to have these teams mark the knee - which would require all these hammerheads to actually wear the pants with a knee-pad and colors showing the same. Noticed this year the cutoffs kids want to wear ? Looks like a pair of biker shorts, in the middle of a football game. No padding at all.

Very similar. Engaged with an opponent up high while a 2nd opponent hits down low, directly into knee from the side.

If that aint dirty, then there is so such thing as a dirty hit.

What you're experiencing is an emotional, not rational, response.

You gotta' hit him low, or you can't bring him down.

shite Minka Fitzpatrick has been taught, I'll guess, since way back in youth ball.

Folks, it's a dirty game. If you don't believe that ? Watch, in every game on TV, how many times a good wrap-up between the tackles results in that "gator roll".

I’ve often wondered if football would be better with a leather helmet and no face mask.

You’d probably see less helmet to helmet plays.. and more rugby style tackling.. people with the ball wouldn’t be using their helmet as a weapon as well..

It’ll never happen, and I’m not sure that it would help, but i’ve thought about it.

3 - The biggy. No hits below the waist. Either on the line during blocks, or tackles. This one would change the game. I think for the better.

So you have about a 1.5 foot window to tackle someone?

You’re just not going to remove bad injuries in a sport like football.

After watching Rugby ? Yes, I'd say it would. All these dudes use helmets and shoulder pads as a weapon. You don't see it work that way in rugby.

But then the game wouldn't be as popular. The "big sticks" are what keeps certain folks coming back.

JJ Watt talked about it a couple years ago. Every defensive player knows you don’t dive at a players legs when they are already engaged high. It still happens a ton but there’s a reason it’s illegal on offense.

I’m not saying he can’t go low, because that’s the best way to tackle Chubb, but throwing his body at his legs when he’s already engaged is not only super dangerous but also way less effective than wrapping up his legs.

It’s just bad football. Think about it. Once the player is engaged high, and another player dives at his legs, one of two things can happen. Either the leg gives out, or the defender just bounces off

Possibly. And that's the big opposition here now, from the folks smashing their down-vote as hard as they do would like to smash old school Tanya Roberts.

Not what it would do to Nick Chubb's leg. But rather what it would do to the competitive balance of the game.

Thoughts and prayers, though. Thoughts and prayers.

Players were getting killed or maimed back in the day and football was almost banned. Players are going to play.

I know watching Chubb’s knee is what everyone is doing but please go back and actually watch the tackle. Minkah’s knee literally gave out as he was going to tackle and he went down. He didn’t go low on purpose. He also got hurt on the play.
