What a weird sport that this record equates to the 18th ranked team.

I think gymnastics is an incredibly impressive sport and it's cool to watch. However the scoring makes it difficult for me to get really into. To my very untrained eye it seems like there is SO much subjectivity in the scoring within the same meet not to mention from meet to meet with all the different judges. I also think the judges are influenced a bit by home crowds going nuts for routines. Also the scoring range is so tight. 197 sucks and a 198 is awesome.

To the casual fan if you didn't reveal the scores until the very end of the meet I don't think people would have a clue whether their team got an awesome 198 or a terrible 197.

Winning or losing a meet has no influence on your rankings. Simplified, the rankings are based on your average scores. Winning a meet only really matters in postseason when the winners move on. It’s more about putting up good scores. 197 is a good score to start the season, at this point 197.5 or higher is a good score. 197.8 or higher is a great score.
