the sub rules changed way, way before gus. I distinctly rmember when Richt first got here in 2001 he brought his HUNH from FSU and after we beat tennessee fulmer complaind so much about the D not having time to sub that rules were changed.

Maybe more severe changes happened in the 2013ish era that you're mentioning, but I still don't think that alone was the cause for his fall off. It sounds so simple to say but an offense based heavily around an RPO wiht a QB that is mobile as hell and can also throw really gave people fits in that era. It wasn't overly complicated but he ran it to near perfection. But then who ran it after Marshall? Jeremy JOhnson, sean white, stidham, nix.

JJ and white were garbage. Stidham could throw but wasn't a running threat. Nix was a good combo of both and was alright and they got alright results.

I dont' think it's nearly as complicated as it may seem; his talent dropped off at the most important position for his system and he suffered.

bullshite.

You don't remember saban, among others, complaining about "player safety"?

ETA after that if the O subs, the D has like 8 seconds to sub. That took away Gus' mojo.

From the Macon Telegraph, June 3, 2004:

Notebook: UGA’s Richt rebuffed in no-huddle bid

Georgia football coach Mark Richt continued the two-year fight for his no-huddle offense this week at the SEC Meetings.

“He and I talked about it for the last three hours,” Bobby Gaston, the league’s director of officials, said Friday afternoon on the second day of the meetings at the Sandestin Hilton.

Since coming to Georgia, Richt has all but ditched the fast break offense he made famous at Florida State because, he says, the league’s officials don’t allow him to go fast enough to make it worthwhile. SEC officials are required to pause for 12-14 seconds between each play, and that’s not going to change despite Richt’s arguments, Gaston said.

“He doesn’t agree with it, but he knows what we’re doing,” Gaston said.

The mandatory pause is to allow the officiating crew to get in position, Gaston said. Richt argued that the officials should put the ball in play as soon as they are set, regardless of how much time has elapsed, but Gaston said that would provide the offense an unfair advantage.

“Mark Richt would eat their lunch,” he said. “He would go straight to the ball and snap it. He’d get in 100 plays. We have about half the coaches who think we go too fast and about half who think we go too slow so we must be in about the right spot.”

The second, and more controversial rule, addresses defensive substitutions and hurry-up offenses. Under this proposal, offenses would not be able to snap the ball in the first 10 seconds of the play clock, to allow defenses to make the proper substitutions. If an offense attempts to snap the ball in this time, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty would be assessed. The rule wouldn't be in play during the last two minutes of each half.

Saban and Bielema were both at the meeting where the proposal (now dubbed the Saban-Bielema rule) was raised, and Washington State head coach Mike Leach took to Twitter to express his distaste at other coaches' involvement.

Do you enjoy argyuing with yourself? Let's recap:

-I pointed out that early in Richt's tenure rules were changed to slow down his no huddle.
-I specifically stated that later on in the Gus tenure more stringent rules may have also been put in place, I don't really know
-Proof was posted that in 2002 the league office employed rules to slow down richt's hurry up offense.
-Proof was posted that over 10 yeras later more harsh restrictions were in place

And yet, you act as if you've proven a point or won an argument somehow. Very odd.

They may have been, but that had no bearing on the modern day HUNH. (as per the coaches who couldn't stop it wanting the rules changed)

The changes in 2014 crippled the HUNH.

Gus couldn't handle the rule changes with subs. Freeze is better at adjusting. But Hugh has problems with surrounding himself with "Yes men" and not having an SEC staff. We will have to see how it plays out but he needs experienced coordinators and not yes men to be successful.

Have you not seen the staff he has put together and the work they have put in just 9 months? Flipped players from Ohio State, Georgia, Bama, Miami, Texas, Ole Miss just to mention a few.
He has an outstanding staff not to mention some of the best facilities in the country.
See ya 10/21 in JHS!

I honestly don't remember which of the two it was. But one of them was bashed by his former players. Saying that he said all the right things and put on an act while the cameras were on. Behind the scenes he was such an a-hole and the players hated him, and even worse, avoided him.

I thought it was Freeze but I could be wrong. It was one of the two however

Freeze only won to the degree he did by rampant cheating, which you could argue isn't really possible now considering everyone can pay players legally so that takes his advantage away. But he's proven that he'll do whatever it takes, within the rules or not (typically not), to win.

This is how you know...

In my humble estimation, Freeze is one of the best coaches currently in college football. I liked him when he was at Arkansas State, respected him when coached at rival Ole Miss and I believe he will do very well at Auburn. The guy is just a winner wherever he goes.

They are both highly volatile and require a certain type of QB. If they have that QB and get some breaks, they can be dangerous. I'd give Freeze the edge overall though outside of prudent cell phone usage.

Both cheated. Freeze benefited more by cheating at a weak ole miss.

Several SEC coaches I know say Sleeze is the most dirtiest coach they knew when he was at OM.
