then how can you justifiably judge that team against other good teams in other seasons

Because we're fans and fans love "what-if" questions. However, those questions are inherently flawed as a team like 2019 LSU played in a different era compared to 1971 or even 1995 Nebraska. The rules of the game were different, the rules surrounding recruiting were different, the way schools recruited was different, and the way schools approached the game were different.

However, what we can do is look at the competition those three schools played against, the competition their opponents played against, and the way they all performed relative to their competition, and say that Team A had a more dominant season than Team B.

I think we're actually agreeing with each other. We CAN look at a team and see how dominant they were, but again, what does that mean compared to other seasons and the competition that other teams played. What if even 2 teams that Bama beat in 2020 could have mopped the floor with every single ranked team that LSU 2019 team beat? Wouldn't that mean then that the Bama team was the best? Again, we'll never know. And it would take God speaking to LSU fans from the burning bush to convince them that LSU 2019 wasn't the best. I say that was a good team, but IMHO they had the best passing game, by a close margin over the Miami team, but that Nebraska team was a monstrous team. Line them up against LSU defense and see what would have happened. I think UGA's 2021 had the best D I've ever seen in my lifetime but last season's O was better.
In my humble opinion, the 2 best teams OVERALL from top to bottom as far as having no weaknesses was the 2020 Bama and the 2022 UGA teams. Of course, get ready for the LSU fans to stone me for this post.
