OU isn't going to be Nebraska.

Their ability to recruit Texas fairly well puts them in a much better place than Nebraska was when they fell apart.

But what OU could have is a down period like Texas has. OU was a top 5 team most of the last 20 years, despite not winning a title for a long time. They were relevant nearly every year. Texas was relevant very rarely (though they did have some sprinkled great years).

I can see OU going from being there every season to only being there now and then.

Good news for OU is that Cowherd is never wrong.

After ten years in the SEC, OU will be as hard as nails.

But those first ten years will be brutal. They're not lucky enough to be joining at a time when everyone they have to play is down, a la Missouri.

They will have to temper expectations or go through a revolving door of coaches that could quickly send them to the bottom.

Can you explain why you think this way?

I feel the same way so I'll add my thoughts.

He's a former DC turned HC. Today's game is all about offense. Regardless if you're a former DC or OC, some coordinators never transition well to a HC. I think that's the issue here. He didn't just look bad last season but totally over his head. How does a HC get shoutout against Texas like that?

Back to today's game being all about offense. OU should have either hired a young, successful OC to take over or a splash hire. The two that come to mind are Fleck or Urban Meyer. I obviously don't get paid to make big decisions like this so maybe my two candidates are horrible.

But they can't be worse than Venables

This is dumb on so many levels. DC turned Head coaches have won the last 3 National titles. The best OC turned HC “Lincoln Riley” will never win a Championship.

Even with a gutted team and qb who missed games (with no viable backup) OU finished 11th in offense last year. Offense is not and never has been our problem. BV will get the D fixed and our offense has even more weapons now with a top 5*+ qb as backup (I think he takes over during the year). You will see a vsstly improved defense this year as well. BV played a lot of games at Clemson vs SEC teams so knows what it takes to beat them.

Those writing him off are being hasty after 1 year of a gutted team. His schemes are good but take a bit fo learn. He had Grinch players and some young or portal players but this year will have a lot more of his players.

I'll give you Kirby Smart.

But are you counting Saban? He can literally have any OC in the country he wants. He has a coaching staff that no other program has year in and year out. He's an anomaly.

While UGA has had an amazing defense during their run. Show me how many programs field a team with NFLers like that throughout their 2deep on defense?

Do you think today's football is "defense wins games" or "football is all about QBs and scoring?"

OU couldn't put up even a field goal at a neutral site against their rival. They hadn't looked that bad in... how many years? I can't remember the last time they looked that bad.

I have to also comment about this line and LOL. We had exactly that with Riley and never won it all. Riley had 3 Heisman winning QB’s and a Heisman runner up (so 4 of the best) and still lost. He lost due to defense.

BV hired an OC who did well in a gutted team. BV is hands off and Lebby is pretty good with offenses. We had to change it up and fix the defense to compete in SEC. Riley ran away from the SEC as he is all offense and knew it would expose him. BV embraces it and took the challenge head on, and knows his legacy will be most remembered by what he does as HC not as DC.

He had a plan for years and turned down HC jobs, and would only take this one. He has completely rebuilt this team from culture to players. His assistants have a lot of SEC coaching experience as well.

I think by late Nov people will be singing a different tune.

This tells me you didn’t watch the OU Texas game. Also tells me you did not pay attention to OUs team last year. Which is fine. But to fill you in. Thanks to L Riley all our recent recruited QB were playing and starting at others schools. That includes last years Heisman winner. Gabriel was hurt the previous week and was out. So OU literally had a TE playing QB that game. Even with that atrocity of a showing, OU had a top 15 offense last year. Offense isn’t OU’s problem, it’s defense. Which is why OU hired BV. Clemson has no championships without BV.

I don't know if Venables is the guy but OU will be fine. Lincoln isn't roughly 90 minutes from DFW.

I think this rhetoric will change. Kirby, Saban, Dabo are thought to be the top coaches today. ALL struggled their first year at their schools and had similar records. BV is changing the soft a$$ mentality of Chokelahoma everyone is accustomed to. Which is a fair criticism under the previous regimes. We will know soon enough. Could very well be OU’s version of Charlie Strong. Recruit well and not win.

No I quoted you and your concern about BV not being the right guy. The rhetoric seems to be very present on this board. He might not be the guy, but I dam sure know LR wasn’t.

So you're building a strawman instead.

So defense has been the problem and you hire a former National Champion, DC in Venables. Which gave up 32.5 points per game.

Ok

Mizzou typically doesn't light up the recruiting rankings. But they find players that are underrated, over looked, or develop them well. How do you think Mizzou has been able to pull things off? Go look
