No objective measure puts Auburn over Clemson.

I mean I do agree… but one must wonder what Clemson’s resume would be the past 20 seasons had they played the SEC West +UGA every year rather than the embarrassingly weak ACC slate they play every season.

Would they have won their 2 national titles? Doubtful.

It’s one thing to struggle against Georgia and LSU. It’s another thing to struggle with Syracuse.

We’ll never know the answer, but my guess is that if Clemson had played Auburn’s exact schedule the past 20 years, there is almost zero chance they’d have a National Championship and two #2 finishes as Auburn has during the same time period.

At the same time they’ve proven that at their best, they can line up with any program. At one point they were the only program that would give Alabama a consistent run for their money. They probably handed Alabama their biggest loss in the last 15 seasons.

Looked it up for curiosity’s sake….

Wins against Final AP Top 10 opponents the last 20 years:
Auburn- 16
Clemson- 9

Overall Auburn is 16-41 (28.1%) against Top 10 opponents. Clemson is 9-21 (30.0%). Very close in terms of winning percentage but the fact Auburn has played 27 more games against Top 10 opponents compared to Clemson the last 2 decades is astounding.

Imagine if they played an even decently tough schedule.

Only Alabama (22), Ohio St (19), and LSU (18) have more wins against Top 10 opponents the last 20 seasons.
