I would submit 2000 for worst collapse though. State beat both SEC Championship participants mid season and had three chances to wrap up Atlanta and lost all three. At least they were close. Two overtime losses to Arkansas and LSU and then to Ole Miss. Watched Auburn lose to Florida in SEC Champ game. State held Auburn without a first down through three quarters and beat the shite out of Florida.

If I’m not mistaken, State controlled their own destiny going into the last two games and then proceeded to lose both of them. That Arkansas game in the sleet was brutal. Hadn’t lost a home game in three years and then proceeded to blow a 10 point lead to lose to a then 4-5 Arkansas team. Had multiple field goals blocked or botched if I recall.

We were pretty much out of it for the West after that but the Egg Bowl still sucked. State went up 16-0 then OM finished the game on a 45-14 run. State was playing a backup freshman QB most of the night because Wayne Madkin had like a 102 fever and couldn’t give us much.

Two things I remember from that game, besides the fact it was the coldest I had ever been at a game, including a -20 windchill game.

State guy intercepted the ball and had an easy pick6. Ran several steps with the ball and just ran OOB untouched.

State was lined up to run a play with like 10 or 20 seconds before the half at the 1 or 2 yard line, and the ref stood over the ball the whole time and wouldn't let State run the play, and the clock ran out.

Game went into OT 10-10. Getting either chance would have likely won the game for State.
