Just to be clear, not all of those wins and losses for Saban are at Alabama. I don’t know the particular breakdown, but I do know more of the losses came at Michigan State and LSU.

The counter to that is that if your team beats a ranked team, that other team's ranking will go down and be lower at the end of the season. It's like if Georgia hadn't have beaten Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU, all of those teams would've been ranked higher at the end of the season.

I disagree that that is a counter. I mean, using your logic if they had gone undefeated they would have won the title, therefore they were truly the title winners. But they did lose those games and got ranked accordingly.

It's why the shittiest teams are statistically the most likely to end up playing the most teams ranked in the Top 25 at the end of the season, because they didn't beat any of them lol.

Actually I would bet the best teams play more top 25 teams at the end of the season, because they play in their conference championship game and then a higher bowl or playoffs.

Test the hypothesis and see which team played more top 25 teams. Vanderbilt or Georgia. (I haven't looked)

Or San Diego State or Michigan.

I haven't looked at either.

Let's all congratulate Appy State on beating a top-10 aTm, team last year. Sure, they finished the season 2-6 in conference and 5-7 overall...but those week 2 rankings are really important and something to hang your hat on.

I won't say that weeks 1-12 don't matter...but the rankings in weeks 1-6 are pretty much a crap shoot on accuracy. There just isn't enough data to make an accurate assessment.

100% this. Early season rankings are frequently way off for many teams, so using only the final AP after completeing a full schedule makes the most sense.

List is surprising in some ways and not really in others. Interesting list overall.

I shouldn't speak fro Meansonny, but how so? I mean, if they went on and lost 3-4 more games and dropped out of the top 25 how can you say you beat a top 25 team?

Look at it like this. (No offense to Texas A&M intended)
Do you look at Texas A&M in 2022 as a top 25 team? Did Appalachian State beat a top 25 team, when we know A&M went on to be unranked and a 5-7 record?

A few key words were left out and those were ‘By seasons end.’

Semantics but they do matter.

I’m not joking.

If LSU is so intimidating, then how the hell did this happen?^^^ Campaigning to paint the bleachers a new color to make the lack of fan support less embarrassing.

It wasn't lack of fan support. Probably an Ole Miss game where they left their seat early to storm the field.

App state beat a top 25 team?

The funny part is that there is some thread in your Ole Miss mind that you are clinging to.
Some victory.

And looking at the opponent at the end of the season somehow spoils that moment for you.

Dawg fans don't brag about beating #1 Tennessee. Or when we do, it is very tongue in cheek. Hilarious, actually.

You are what your record says you are.

Wally Butts should have hung it up in 48. UGA was terrible in the 50’s salvaged only by Fran Takenton’s 59 SECC team (that Pat Dye also played on). The matters got worse with Griffin for 3-4 years until they hired Dooley. UGA had some good coaches before Kirby but we’d never had a great one.

Not at all.

Just pointing out you can’t complete the correct sentence. If I play a team that’s in the top 25 I have beaten a team in the top 25. You are referring to seasons end. Therefore you should have said beaten a top 25 team by seasons end, which you did not.

didn't realize Lane's was that bad

Tell that to Ed Orgeron who couldn't beat Mizzou/Drinkwitz.
Plus, Ed Orgeron used to be the Ole Miss HC and he was that bad and still is but got lucky to win a championship with the right combo with others having a down year at the same time. Is Ed a HC at a power of 5 right now? Even Barry Odom beat out Ed for the ULV HC job.

This is the most eye opening section. I had no idea Lane was so lame. And Heupel the savior is 6-10??? Wow.

Are you seriously dogging Heupel on that? He took over a 3 win team and managed to do pretty well in year 2.
