Because the recognition of titles that weren't from one of the 3 major selectors became basically ironclad around the 1970s. There are quite a few pre 1970 across the country (as you pointed out). There very few if any after 1980. The post said Auburn should claim 3 of them.

Says who? There was a national standard for picking champs beginning in 1936? What fantasy event “around the 1970s” changed anything. An Auburn claim of 1983 would be stupid but no more stupid than those other 4…. And #20 Bama’s claim is the most stupid of them all.

Bama didn’t claim all their extra titles until the 1980’s, so your argument doesn’t hold up. Bear Bryant believed he won Bama’s first.
