Many schools have been gypped out of national titles, but 1983 Auburn was one of the worst

Shiloh Carder shares that Miami, the eventual champion, was #5 entering their game vs. #1 Nebraska, who was heavily favored. Miami came from nowhere that '83 season. Miami was a nothing program.
The #5 Hurricanes defeated the #1 Cornhuskers, 31-30, in the Orange Bowl. But, here's the kicker:
#2 Texas lost to #7 Georgia in the Cotton Bowl and #4 Illinois lost to un-ranked UCLA in the Rose Bowl. #5 Miami leapfrogged over #3 AUBURN (who had beaten Michigan in the Sugar Bowl), which caused a fury of complaints from both AUBURN and the SEC.
The Tigers had beaten #4 Georgia, #5 Florida, #7 Maryland, #8 Michigan and #19 Alabama during the season. Miami had only beaten two ranked teams -- #13 Notre Dame and #12 West Virginia -- before their Orange Bowl win.
AUBURN was gypped out of a title here, imo.

Probably should mention that #2 Texas beat Auburn and their only loss was 10-9 to Georgia in the bowl game.
Not to mention Miami's win over Nebraska was a big deal.. they were undefeated and had beaten the holy frick out of most of their opponents.
Auburn was probably lucky to be ranked #3. Texas should have been ranked over them.

Yes.
Also, Miami’s lone loss was to #5 Florida in blowout fashion. 25-3. Auburn beat that same Gators squad, 28-21.

False, 83 Auburn got arse pounded by Texas in what was the biggest home non-conference game in its history up to that point:
The AP and UPI agree.

It didn't help that the Sugar Bowl was boring and on at the same time as the Orange Bowl classic (which NBC advertised as "the national title game").

Aubs would have won had they just scored ONE damn touchdown against Meeechigan that night in the Sugar Bowl. I agree though, but dayyyummm Auburn, one TD!

You don't seem to understand how opinion polls work

Auburn's 1983 snub was very similar to Alabama's 1977 snub in that the pollsters were overly enamored with the team that knocked off the #1 team in their bowl game.
Both 1983 Auburn and 1977 Alabama lost to really good teams very early in the season to Texas and @ Nebraska respectively before going on to win out the rest of the season.
1983 Auburn beat some very good teams and entered the Sugar Bowl ranked #3 and beat Michigan 9-7 with #1 and #2 losing their bowl games. The pollsters got caught up in the moment with #5 Miami's win over #1 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and leapfrogged them all the way to #1.
As bad as Auburn's snub in 1983 was, 1977 Alabama's was arguably even worse. Alabama lost @ Nebraska 24-17 the second week of the season before winning out the regular season including a win on the road against #1 USC. Worst of all eventual national champion Notre Dame's only loss that year cane against the same 5-6 Ole Miss team Alabama beat 34-13 just two weeks earlier. #3 Alabama went on to beat Ohio State 35-6 in the Sugar Bowl while the #2 team lost their bowl game. Just as with 1983 Auburn, the pollsters were enamored with #5 Notre Dame's bowl win over #1 Texas and leapfrogged them over Alabama despite Alabama's blowout Sugar Bowl win and despite Alabama's blow out win against the same Ole Miss team that beat Notre Dame earlier that year. The 1977 snub to me was even worse than the 1966 snub given the fact that Notre Dame lost to a 5-6 team that Alabama had beaten 34-13 earlier that same season.

I think the best argument for Auburn is that they played a significantly harder schedule than Nebraska, Texas, and Miami.

Bama has a truly shite claim in the 40s they should let go of, but the 66 champion should have been UA. Complete horseshite. Totally political and the state has only itself to blame for its backwards arse thinking and political views

What if Osborne would have kicked the extra point and took the tie? Would Nebraska have been at least co-champs?

It's 40 years later. Who gives a frick...we aren't bama and their bullshite.

I agree, but it seems that your HC Pat Dye was the only football person in america who didn't realize that it wasn't enough to win. He thought that was his job, but it was more. I truly believe had they scored a td and won 13-7 instead of of 9-7 ya'll would have won the championship.
he was a good coach, and he was very, very conservative.
STill, ya'll got cheated out of that one.

It was controversial at the time but the reason it hasn't lingered was that the media set up a decider game in the Kickoff Classic at Giants stadium to open the 1984 season. Any old school baws remember the ol' Kickoff Classic?
Anyway #2 Miami won that game 20-18 over #1 Auburn for Jimmie Johnson's first win and people shut up about who deserved it in 83.
Another thing that hurt Auburn was they played Nebraska at home in 1982 and got throttled by like 35 points. That 82 Nebraska team was probably even better. They had one of the greatest O-lines ever and had Mike Rozier, Tom Rathman and Roger Craig running the option. They had something like 500 yards rushing against Auburn that day and averaged over 10 yards a carry. Their Oline mauled us. People remembered that a year later when everyone was trying to sort out who beat who that beat who.

I’ve studied the history of college football for over 20 years, especially the whole mythical national championship saga year-after-year. As discussed already before and in this thread, there are many instances where programs have been snubbed out of a national championship.
My top ten snubs:
1. 1966 Alabama
2. 1983 Auburn
3. 1952 Georgia Tech
4. 1960 Missouri
5. 1994 Penn State (at least a share)
6. 1977 Alabama
7. 1975 Arizona State (see 1984 BYU)
8. 1954 Oklahoma
9. 1960 Ole Miss
10. 1946 Army (denied 3peat)
