When Spurrier spurned UT for Florida, though he grew up in the shadow of Neyland, that permanently etched that rivalry in stone

UT never offered the HBC a football scholarship.

What could've been.

Spurrier made the right choice to go to Florida for 2 reasons:

1. Tennessee was still running a Wing-T when he graduated from Science Hill.

2. Tennessee didn't offer him a scholarship for football. He was only offered a scholarship to play basketball at UT (by Ray Mears). So I don't know that not playing somewhere that didn't offer you a scholarship is "spurning" them.

BTW, Science Hill is 106 miles from Neyland Stadium...so it must have been a huge shadow.

Spurrier didn't spurn us. He wanted to go to UT but Neyland was still running an older offense that wouldn't make use of him. Ironically, he switched by the time Spurrier would've been eligible anyway.
