Maybe I'm just getting old but the fact 80m was spent so a bunch of spoiled teenagers, many of whom are just hired thugs, could work out in style is a really sad commentary on society and our priorities

Since no one else is saying it, the prior system Alabama installed was a predictive model that's never been used anywhere else.

The goal is to analyze past injuries, collect literally millions of data points during games and practice, and attempt to predict when an injury is occurring (maybe months out), so that individual remediation can be done to prevent it.

An example would be a player slightly distributing his weight differently over the course of several weeks in practice, and the algorithm identifies a future ACL issue. That player would then begin a personal regiment to strengthen associated muscles so it doesn't happen.

Research like this has never been done on elite athletes, and the goal is to perfect it so that it can be used across the gamut of sports, and even the general population some day (for all of us).

It's actually really fascinating.

ETA:

“Last year our injuries were down by about 50%, soft tissue injuries. We increased explosive movement during the season by almost 5%, which we had not done for several years,” Saban said.

What was the big change? Transitioning from a powerlifting approach to more of focus on explosive movement. The Crimson Tide did that by letting David Ballou, Dr. Matt Rhea, and the rest of the strength and conditioning staff incorporate this velocity training approach in conjunction with an emphasis on technology to test the players.
