Here's one reason:
In America, basketball goals are everywhere. And Americans love the game. It's a game that can be played in gymnasiums, driveways, backyards, etc. A game can break out almost anywhere under the right conditions. And there is an abundance of good talent.
Speaking of talent...Al Dillard comes to mind. At the time Nolan Richardson recruited him, he was older than most players and smaller in stature. And if I remember correctly, Dillard had been working at at a grocery store in Alabama sacking groceries. Most college coaches had never even heard of him. But Nolan had heard (through word of mouth) that Dillard was an excellent shooter. So he took the time to go see for himself and gave Dillard a chance. Turned out to be a truly GREAT 3 point shooter. One of the best ever.
