It really does strike me, whenever I stop to think about it, just how far we've come ... based upon nothing more than just how cheaply everyone in the United States can eat and eat well. Thanks to advances in modern agriculture and distribution.

You ever watch the History Channel ? I love their "Stuff that Built America" series. They had a thing on Heinz and Campbells a couple nights ago. In the early 20th century ... a half gallon can of pre-made tomato soup cost the equivalent of $40 today. Can you imagine ?

And now ? You can buy a meal in a can for a buck if you catch it on sale. It's remarkable. And my God, if you're willing to garden - and we do - the stuff is just about free. Seeds are so cheap you don't even look at the price - you just buy what you want and grow as much as you like. All for a little sweat in the evenings.

People can say roads, military prowess, the dollar, etc, but our agricultural lands and climate diversity allow us to grow a plentiful supply of darn near anything at a reasonable cost has as much to do with our independence and sustainment as anything.
