He was smooth as peach fuzz. Best college player ever.

Not even close.

Pistol Pete was a very skilled player, but not very good because of the way he and his father chose for him to play.

Bring on the downvotes.

The GOAT at volume shooting (at a worse percentage than the rest of his team; yes that's right, if you played LSU in that era, you wanted Pete shooting), playing no defense and giving zero fricks about winning.

Maravich playing for Coach Rupp would have been a great player because Rupp would have made him use his skills to contribute to winning. Playing for Press, he was arse.

If you want to shine because of NCAA stats in 5 years, then he had an outstanding career at the Detroit Mercy level of basketball. If you want to compare him to Pistol Pete, then you had better bring a bigger measuring stick.

This^^*

No sense trashing the kid. He had a phenomenal career. horizon league players play with horizon league teammates usually.

Pete was legendary, in a league of his own, hanging out with meer mortals.

Has anyone ever figured or estimated what Pete’s avg would have been with a 3pt line?

I doubt much different. Back then what would be a 3 pt shot today was frowned upon as a bad shot. But, he had a sweet as pure cane sugar 15-18 foot jumper.

Pistol Pete is a legend. The GOAT of college ball.

However, LSU still sucks and their fans suck even more.

Amazing [thing] about Pete is … 44 points per game, in his career, for three straight years in an era with no 3-point line. Dale Brown, who coached LSU after Press and Pete were there, went back and charted all the games with the running score – Maravich free-throw, Maravich 22-foot jumper, Maravich lay-up – and he calculated that with the current college 3-point line rule at 19’9” Pete Maravich would have averaged 13 3-point makes per game, which would have given him a career average of 57.0 points per game under today’s rules! That guy was UN-BE-LIEVABLE! We love him, we miss him terribly, what a great man, what a great human being.”

Yes, nothing in the OP suggests he was trolling any fanbase here. Are you seeing things?

Saw a cool Pistol Pete stat today:

Pete played 83 varsity games over three years in college. If you added up the 83 highest-scoring individual games from every player in the country the past three years, it would still fall short of Pete’s total.
