he is just better than Golding we will be playing for Nattys
I think we all know Golding is hardly the reason for us winning Natty's. We had so much offense it was kind of hard not to win at least one. I'm just saying that Kirby and Pruitt are the coaches I choose to measure Steele against.
For the record, I like the hire.

What I don’t get is we literally talked earlier this year on the board after the LSU loss that we needed a change. That Saban’s “defense” wasn’t going to work anymore and he needed to adjust like he did with the offense in 2014 with Kiffin. We go and hire the exact opposite of that and pretty much bring in a good ole boy from Saban’s earlier years that will run the exact same system and people are trying to spin it like it’s great. Do I think the defense will all of a sudden suck? No absolutely not but this hire needed to show Nick was ready to tweak his system and let someone else run the defense for the most part.
Saban's defense isn't the problem. Golding's idiotic tweeks to Saban's system were the problem. Saban gave him way too much leeway to do his own thing. Steele will NOT run Saban's defense the "exact same" way Golding did.

Miami and ND fans are both happy with the hires we've made. Not dancing in the streets happy but they are happy. If Rees was a stud OC he would've put up numbers at ND. He wouldn't have scored 14 points against Stanford, 10 points against OSU, and 21 points against Marshall. He isn't even a good OC.
Steele has a solid history of job performance but I wonder if he's on the decline because he didn't do well at Miami in a weak ACC.

You completely ignored my whole statement but ok name calling is always proof you’re right and I’m wrong. Steele is a guy that will run Saban’s defense no questions asked. Don’t really care what he did the first time with Saban because 07-09 defense won’t cut it now a days. Steele has been average to bad everywhere else he’s been a DC outside of the time he had Derrick freaking Brown at Auburn. Having an elite DT that can wreck game plans makes the DC’s job a whole lot easier. I’m all for more physicality but you can’t just be more physical than everyone like we did in 09 and 11 and win games anymore. You have to be able to scheme with the best OC’s and Steele isn’t going to do that. Armstrong might but we know what we are getting with Steele and it’s average to above average.

Golding and the time he got at Bama (5 seasons) were the first sign Saban was losing it. These hires have confirmed things for me. Get the succession plan together.

I agree we aren’t going to be doing absolutely moronic schemes. Nothing can be worse than Golding but Saban just stamped that he isn’t adjusting his defense period. Whether that works or not we’ll see.

You claim to know what plans Saban has "stamped" for the defense in hiring Steele. But you haven't really articulated what Saban has in mind. I suspect he wants things simpler, enabling our talented players to play faster, more aggressively and with more physicality.

If you are a young up&comer coach and you get a call from a 70+ year old headcoach (ignore the name Saban) who tells you what you will run (O or D) and cannot tell you (or will not tll you) how many more years he will be the man... Is that job offer the best thing for your career going forward?
He is a great recruiter, but how much longer can he beat down the "time is running out" that other coaches are using against him?
Is he going to coach 2 more years than sail away to his dock to watch the ducks shite in his back yard?
If he does retire in 2 years, what impact does that have on my ability to continue advancing my career?
Tough spot to sell to a young up&comer. Pruitt was the one that would shatter that narative but Saban could not make that call yet. I will be curiously watching what happens this spring and how it builds toward the fall.

Agreed.
You guys can spin it any way you want, I’m concerned that it took GOAT this long to make a hire this pedestrian. INB4 “troll” because I have a different opinion.
I’m not a Golding fan at all… but what will the Steele supporters say when Kiffin scores 50 + on Steele and Golding holds Rees to 21 or less? Will you guys then admit these aren’t great hires? ‘Cause they’re not… and that would be a truly epic failure on the GOAT.

we got some debbie downers. NS is surrounding himself on D with people he knows and trusts. IN KS he has a fellow Defensive guy and is the same age spectrum as himself.
He knows he can turn the d over to KS and focus on the O some with the new OC
Am I thrilled? Kinda is the only answer I have

Bottom-line for me, I may not be thrilled but:
Steele > Golding
Rees > BoB
Steele > Golding
Rees > BoB

This. May not be the greatest or what we wanted, but i think both are upgrades from what we had.

I get what you're saying with Steele. But, Rees can't hold BOB's headsets. Please stop. You look crazy talking up Rees like that because he's done NOTHING at ND to be OC at Bama. Not a damn thing.

I'm confident that BOB could've scored more than 14 points against a Stanford team that was in disarray.

I guess we will have our answer going for it 4Th and inches whether we line up shotgun or under center.

This is what Tim Brown (ND Heisman trophy winner and NFL HOFer) said about Tommy Rees.

This is a great day for Irish football and maybe even a better day for Tommy Rees. I've been around a lot of offenses, but the Irish offense last year, with maybe the exception of the North Carolina game, was extremely predictable. Seeing the offense struggle told me

At least two things. 1) Tommy was very dependent on Kelly and more important, he didnt have the ability to dissect a defense. What we saw is what I call HERO ball! You have a player(mayer) who is better than the person covering and you throw him the ball a zillion times. Make

Him the hero. If that doesn't work you lose. I was at a couple of games where it took everything in me not to go knock on the booth window and say give me the call sheet!!! Lol! I truly wish him well, he's gonna need it! Let's Go Irish!
