f course, I would rather have Pruitt or Chavis
John Chavis is one of the more overrated DCs to coach in the SEC. Steele could be a good hire.

He did well at Bama in 2007: Took a D with 3, YES THREE, essential walk-ons starting, and helped Bama come within a 4th and 3 stop vs the eventual NCs, from winning the SEC West with the 5th best talent in the division.

He did a great job at AU, including holding LSU to 23 in BR in 2019, Bama gave up 46 at home. That was the lowest point total of their season, the next lowest being 36.

Terrible hire.

Saban clearly has dementia.

What I don’t get is we literally talked earlier this year on the board after the LSU loss that we needed a change. That Saban’s “defense” wasn’t going to work anymore and he needed to adjust like he did with the offense in 2014 with Kiffin. We go and hire the exact opposite of that and pretty much bring in a good ole boy from Saban’s earlier years that will run the exact same system and people are trying to spin it like it’s great. Do I think the defense will all of a sudden suck? No absolutely not but this hire needed to show Nick was ready to tweak his system and let someone else run the defense for the most part.

I'm not exactly excited by the hire, but on the other hand, I don't think Steele is going to outsmart himself by trying to reinvent the wheel. He's going to line up and let his guys beat your guys, which, at Bama, is probably a good recipe for success.

I'll reserve judgment until we see the results, but it could turn out to be exactly what I wanted except for the name.

Sunshine pump this hire any way you want, but Steele is not the best this program could do. Saban took weeks for this hire and we absolutely settled.....Maybe Pruitt will be DC in the shadows.

People are way too down on this. He doesn’t have to be as good as Pruitt or Kirby he just has to be better than Golding….and he is.

I have to disagree. Golding isn't the standard that is set here at Bama. Steele is expected to have a top defense.

No, what it seems like is that part of the Bama fan base is stupid enough to think that they know football better than the greatest coach in the history of the sport.

Other fan bases do it too - people think that because they played HS ball and have watched a bunch of games on TV, that they know what is going on. They don't. Even when they get it right, it is just a lucky guess and they don't really know why.

The arrogance of many fans is amazing. And they really think they know.

Buddy, we won a National Title with Golding and were a Torn ACL away from another. Plus we were 2 plays away from being in the playoffs this year with Golding.

If he is just better than Golding we will be playing for Nattys

Both hires are exactly what 99% of y’all were wanting. And still the hand wringing.

A more physical, run based approach on offense.

A simpler scheme on defense.

It’s not flashy but can definitely work out well. A complementary approach.

Thanks - great post.

You are wrong on both accounts and attacking a fellow Bama fan for no reason at all. Just because we may have differences of opinion doesn't mean someone is a troll.

Literally 100% of your "opinions" are negative and the only time you ever show up to express them is when something bad happens. You know, because you're a troll.

Have never compared them as coaches. I’m comparing the end of their tenures coaching. Bowden got lazy and let everyone else run the program. Saban isn’t there yet but it’s trending the exact same way with this Steele hire. Bring in someone you know can do it for you.
You are a dullard.

He is bringing in someone who has previously done a good job with his system. His first time around at Bama was good, his time at AU was very good to great. He is a good DC, certainly good enough to successfully guide Bama's D better than PG. He also will bring a physicality to the D that is desperately needed.

This fits in with the Rees hire: More physicality. That is what this program has lost and needs to regain. Toughness, not feeling "anxious" about playing UT. That is more important than any schematic issues. The program has lost its edge in toughness. Ideally, Steele and Rees will help fix that.
