They’re still praising him after this disappointing season and while he’s getting clocked by USCe.

I laughed at the hire when it was made because I thought (and still do think) that Fickell was the obvious slam dunk fit for them. I also still believe he was hired because ND wanted to score woke points.
All of that said, he did a decent job this season. The losses to Marshall and Stanford were all kinds of awful, but few teams improved more as the season went along than they did, and that's a huge barometer for a first year coach, IMO. He does deserve some credit for their season not going off the rails after the Stanford game, and they ended up putting a pretty good arse whipping on Clemson.
Next season will tell us a lot about how his tenure there will go.
