So what do we do coaching wise?

I know it seems soon to talk about this but my heart has been broken all morning over the Leach news and I just want to think about something different.

We have no AD. Do we let the interim AD do a big coaching search? Do we hire an AD first and let him do it? That’s question number 1.

Question 2. Who could we realistically get at this point that would be decent?

Some say promote our DC Arnett to HC for a year and reassess. Now he has proven to be a great DC but is only 36 years old with only 4 years as a coordinator. There’s a lot a head coach does that would be a big step for him with that little experience. Also you’d have to give him at 3-4 year contract. The 1 year idea would devastate recruiting. This is a high risk/high reward type hire. He would need to hire 2 good coordinators and once again, who is available?

If we go looking for a coach who is available?

Joe Judge - former Giants head coach, current QB coach at New England. Didn’t do great at the Giants but doesn’t mean much. He played at MSU and was a graduate assistant there. Could be a solid hire with NFL offensive experience that could do something with most of our offensive production returning, and NFL offense isn’t much different than the air raid. If Arnett would stay as DC I could see this working.

Who else could be a potential hire? I saw Kingsbury mentioned on the CC board but I’m not sure about that.

Came into a bad situation.

Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur were big busts too.

I think the Giants canned their GM too after they fired Judge.

I think he could be a viable option, given his previous HC experience.

Might not work out, but could do worse.

I would go after Elko. What he has done to duke is amazing. Complete transformation of the culture.

Arnett. Don't over think this.

I think roll with Arnett for 2023 and then let the new AD reassess.

This isn't like a Mike Price scandal that takes him down. These players just had heir head coach die. They need some stability, and keeping Arnett and the rest of the coaching staff will do just that.

It may be a one year deal like the John L. Smith year at Arky, or Arnett may show something and end up being a real up and coming coach and you get him from the beginning.

Maybe it best to tag an interim guy who can stabilize things, rather than trying to make a permanent hire right now?

This is all so sad. I cannot remember another circumstance similar to this one.

Promoting from within (at least for a year) might be the best thing for the locker room, and would probably be the fairest thing to the current coaching staff. If you hire an outsider right now, much of the current staff may lose their jobs because of something totally out of their control.

Might be best to have an interim head coach from the current staff for a year and then reevaluate after next season.

Any State grads in coaching who would be willing to steady the ship for a year or two?

Its Arnett. You announce it prior to the bowl game.

4 year contract at about $2.2-$2.5/year. Could be the best possible hire. I think he can retain staff and get a good Air Raid OC to let Rogers finish as college football's all time passing leader.

The Mississippi State OC job is very attractive with what we have coming back. I think we could pull in a big hire here.

Roll with Arnett. Do another search later once things are more stable.

Go after Garrett Riley or Dana Holgerson. Maybe Gary Patterson.

For now, let the DC have the interim tag and take your time.

With all the emotions swirling I’d take a look at a few coaches but if I didn’t feel great about them, I’d just promote someone on staff to be interim coach for a year. Can’t imagine a new coach walking into that locker room and being able to get through to the team

I think the solution is to name a member on staff as the interim coach. you give him a year to coach. This allows you time to heal, helps keep players on the team, and allows you time to get your AD situation under control. Your coaches arent scrambling to find jobs at the last minute

My gut tells me we keep the staff together. Arnett goes to HC, Spurrier Jr to OC, etc.
