It's actually a sport for starters.

It doesn't generate profit for anyone contrary to popular belief.

It's national champion has typically been chosen based on merit, not what a format that is expanded as far as they think it possible while still generating interest in the games for the profit of those who own it.

If you want to make the argument that college football is moving that way, then I can agree. And a good bit of that has to do with the college football playoff organization itself. Oh which is clearly acting on behalf of businesses like ESPN/Fox etc to implement the same model as the NFL, which is expanding it as far as they think is possible while still generating interest for the profit of ESPN and other networks. The schools will get their kick backs, but this is what is happening.
