You could have co-champs regardless of head to head. Auburn is still credited with 1988 even though LSU beat them in the earthquake game.

I never knew this either. Fascinating. I feel like that is a terrible way of determining a champion though.

That was the way it was done for everyone in Division I-A/FBS until the SEC introduced the conference championship game in 1992. Had Alabama lost that game I doubt you would have seen conference expansion happen the way it did. Because of the success of that game, the Big Eight and Southwest Conference combined to form the Big 12 in 1996, the ACC expanded to 12 teams in 2005, and the other major conferences had all followed suit by the beginning of the last decade.
