Team with the best conference win percentage. The conference itself didn't have everyone play an equal amount until the 80s though.

You could have co-champs regardless of head to head. Auburn is still credited with 1988 even though LSU beat them in the earthquake game.

BAMA was originally declared SEC champion after the 1961 season on the basis of their 8-0 conference record while LSU had a 7-0 record. Later they were declared co-champions.

I never knew this either. Fascinating. I feel like that is a terrible way of determining a champion though.
