Can someone explain to me how an sec champion was determined before 1992. I'm clueless to how that worked. TIA

Team with the best conference win percentage. The conference itself didn't have everyone play an equal amount until the 80s though.

You could have co-champs regardless of head to head. Auburn is still credited with 1988 even though LSU beat them in the earthquake game.

Your confusion is understandable, you thought football began in 2003

I remember one year in the mid-late 80s, or maybe early nineties, Ole Miss and Alabama played, but it didn’t count as a conference game.

The SEC offices in Birmingham just awarded it to Alabama every year.

It was super easy to end with ties as well. There was a 3-way tie in 1989, for example - Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee all ended with 1 loss each, to each other:
Alabama beat Tennessee
Tennessee beat Auburn
Auburn beat Alabama

Ah, the good ol' days.

It went solely by record, which means some years you'd have ties. In 1989, Auburn, Bama, and UT tied for the title. And if you tied, you were fully within your rights to claim SEC champ for that year.

They didn't do "head to head" tie breakers then.
