I wasn’t around back then, so I can’t say. What I will say is this. You are the first person I have ever heard claim this.

If anything it seems like A&M has caught up over time, with UT always being a step or 2 ahead. Lately, UT is really not THAT much better as they are both great schools and far ahead of the other Texas schools (other than rice obviously)

True, A&M started catching up once it transitioned military college a full on state university.

But once A&M caught up, and the two were considered roughly equivalent for a significant period of time, there really is no reason to have fallen behind again besides poor leadership on A&M. Frustrating.
