QB DJ Lagway opens up on rehab, Florida and recruiting Jeremiah Smith

Elite Willis (Texas) signal-caller DJ Lagway was back at The Swamp last week as the Gators kicked off spring practices.

Lagway, the No. 21 player in the On300 for 2024, has been committed to Florida since December. The On3 Industry Rankings’ No. 3 quarterback has been to Gainesville on multiple occasions leading into and since committing to Billy Napier.

His most recent visit left another positive mark.

“I loved the sense of urgency by the coaching staff and the players out there,” Lagway told On3. “They’re hardworking, really hardworking, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Lagway is familiar with The Swamp, one of the reasons that helped the Gators secure his commitment last year over USC and Clemson, among others.
“Everybody out there shows so much love and that’s huge for me to go somewhere where I’m wanted,” Lagway continued. “I’m definitely wanted at Florida.”

Naturally, Lagway kept a close eye on the quarterback battle. With Anthony Richardson only a few weeks away from hearing his name called in the NFL Draft, all eyes are on Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz in Gainesville.
“I’m excited to watch Graham Mertz,” Lagway said. “He has a hard work ethic and I’m just excited to see how he develops and how he plays this year.”

Lagway eyeing five-star WR Jeremiah Smith

Lagway visited Florida last weekend alongside one of the nation’s best receivers, who hails from the Sunshine State.

Five-star Plus+ WR Jeremiah Smith joined Lagway on the visit, and there’s an elevated level of confidence that the two will team up at the next level.

“It was huge,” Lagway said of his time with Smith. “I felt like he enjoyed it and I’m excited to see where we can get him.”

“I feel really great about it,” added Lagway. “Really, really, really great.”

Lagway ahead of schedule with rehab

Lagway’s season came to a halt earlier than anticipated last year at Willis, but the four-star quarterback is already ahead of schedule with his rehabilitation.
Lagway was a top performer this weekend at OT7 South in Austin and is in line to be a full go in time for the season.

“I’m feeling good and just trying to continue to rehab. That’s a bad thing for me to make sure I’m strong and continuing to rehab it (the injury) and get stronger,” he said. “I’m excited to get back out there with the guys, get the chemistry going and make a run my senior year. It’s huge … I’ve been thinking about it all the time since I got hurt, so I need to get my mind right, get my body right, and focus for next year.”
