Not to get into the debate, but I can't understand how SOME form of divisions/groups/pods wouldn't help deciding the sorting of teams.

Geographical is what it is, each side has a big four, more or less:
WEST: OU, Texas, LSU, Texas A&M
EAST: Bama, UGA, Florida, Tenn
Could argue that historically, the West has more overall competitive bottom four teams:
West: Ole Miss, Ark, MS ST, Mizzou
East: Auburn, Kentucky, So Car, Vandy
What I'm saying is that if you do not split it down the middle, then it looks like someone is crying wolf and favors/concessions are being made.

East is not stacked.
East
UGA and Bama
Then you have UT, Auburn and Florida
Then Kentucky, USC
and Vandy
West
LSU, Texas, Okie would be the hierarchy
Arky, State, A&M, OM would next
Missouri bringing up the rear.
Basically that is pretty balanced historically.
East top five are a bit stronger but the West 4-7 is pretty solid even if the top three are a smidgen below to East top 2.
