Has a major program ever retained a coach with zero support because of the buyout cost?

If so, when was the last time? I honestly can't think of a notable time it has happened after the support got as low as Fisher's. Even Auburn, while still paying Chizik's large buyout, canned Malzahn right after a big extension and huge buyout. I can't fathom how a program with any pride can retain a coach with 0% fan support purely because it can't afford otherwise.

The biggest laughing stock in all of college football.

I took a walk at the park this morning. Lots of Tulane gear on. One of those beautiful days in New Orleans.

I got to talking to some Tulane fans about their future bowl game. One of them said they hoped for aTm to be paired with them.

IF they could get enough wins

Swear to God...said IF Aggy could get enough wins. That's coming from a Tulane fan.

YIKES!

Jimbo's contract may be the contract that changes the way universities structure contracts.

Buyouts are typically reduced by whatever that coach ends up making in their next job. So if your buyout is 10m a year for five years, and your next job is 4 m, then only 6m is owed. Also, there are clauses that require you to seek employment, you can't do what Ed O did, that was a special agreement and not typical.

Therefore, don't look at that buyout number for a coach as something you necessarily have to pay. Jimbo's could be different, I'm just commenting in general.

It’s gonna get real interesting over the next few years. Are they gonna keep him around if nobody shows up to the games 3 years from now?

2022: $85,950,000
2023: $76,800,000
2024: $67,550,000
2025: $58,200,000
2026: $48,750,000
2027: $39,200,000
2028: $29,550,000
2029: $19,800,000
2030: $9,950,000

The contract A&M gave Jimbo amounts to administrative malpractice. Maybe you do that with a guy like Saban or Belicheck, and even then it’s ill-advised. Jimbo was never in that tier. He had two really good years with Jameis at FSU. That’s it.

Now they can’t fire him for years. Brutal situation. I feel bad for the Aggies.

LSU was playing 4D chess. They sent Scott Woodward there undercover to hamstring the Aggies with the shittiest contract of all time, setting their program back a generation.

Now all we have to do is just constantly laugh at them... It was all part of the divine plan.

The fact that you think Auburn was still paying Chizik a month shy of 2021 is remarkably dumb.

Don't believe everything your Bammer buddies tell you at the plant. Auburn hasn't paid Chizik a dime in seven years.

Has anybody ever put themselves in a position of a $50M buyout still several years down the road?

I don't like Jimbo or A&M, but I think A&M will be better served by giving Jimbo a few years than spending tens of millions to go roll the dice again.

Jimbo isn't a bad coach (he's not an elite coach either), he'll stabilize and likely win 9 games in the next 2-3 years.

LSU retaining Les Miles in 2015, albeit he was fired 4 games into the following season. But the optics and politics behind his buyout in 2015 is the main reason that 2015 A&M game wasn't his last.

However, that said, with the TV money now, buyouts and coaching contracts just seem like playing with monopoly money.

You will reap what you sow when you give a coach a raise for 8 wins a year. Rebuilding, we young, QB whisperer, #1 recruiting class, we buy what we want, 1939
