Don't know.

But when people post incorrect historical notes in a thread (even if it's meant for another purpose like riling someone up) I have an OCD push to correct them.

The Romans weren't the greatest ancient civilization. Heck, even without the eastern civilizations I don't even think Rome is tops amongst the western ones.

The Greeks would get that nod from me. Or maybe the Egyptians if you consider northern Africa as western.

It depends on what you mean by "civilization", doesn't it? Are you judging by technical or cultural advancement? Land mass and population under their control? Military prowess? Trade?

If we get to choose our own criteria, then an argument could be made that the Steppe Nomads (which includes the Mongols) we're the greatest ancient civilization. They controlled a majority of the known world, and probably would have ruled it all if not for the sudden death of the Khan that made them all return to their homeland to select a new leader.

Assuming that's how you classify civilizations, of course.
