Does it seem to anyone else that kids recruited as athletes don't end up making it as often as you would think based on their ratings? Seems they don't settle into any one role long enough to adjust, maybe?

As a whole I would agree. Of course there are exceptions. Most seem to find their ways on special teams, which is good for the team.

Many of the Bama players listed as athletes in recruiting sites that "didn't make it" left before they had an opportunity to settle in.

It seems that way to me too. I think a lot really depends on there being a strong alignment between the player's goals and the coaching staff's opinion about his strongest role on the field. Especially at a program that is consistently recruiting instant impact freshmen. If you don't settle into a certain position pretty quickly you can easily find yourself stuck behind younger players on the depth chart.
