I agree with you.

But


There are a lot of kids playing at Notre Dame who should have stayed in the SEC but left because it is Notre Dame.
For every athlete that they pass on, they gain an athlete from somewhere across the entire country to choose their academics and religious affiliation.

Theoretically, that should be true but we all know that most elite high school football players care very little about Notre Dame's academics or religious affiliation.
