Tennessee reminds me of the Colorado Buffaloes. Tennessee is an old legacy program that won with the old set of rules when they were true national recruiters. What hurts you now is the lack of elite black athletes within the state itself and the fact that you have to now go against schools in your recruiting area that have programs that are held in much higher esteem. It's just harder for Tennessee now than it was in the 20th century. Only a GREAT coach can get that thing back on track imho.
Somewhat tracks with the recent ascendancy of Clemson as a program.
Very telling is UT's record against the rest of the Big 6. Going back to 2000:
Ala is 17-5 vs UT
Aub is 7-1 vs UT
Fla is 18-4 vs UT
UGA is 16-6 vs UT
LSU is 7-2 vs UT.

I'm thinking you meant 2000.
